Simple Things Digest

Hi Reader,

It's Sharon from Simply Home, back with a new edition of the Simple Things Digest.

Today, I'm taking you behind the scenes of my New Year home reset. Honestly, I'm a little embarrassed to show you the photos, but I want them to be an example of three things:

  1. Change is often messy
  2. We have to be willing to disrupt and uproot the old in order to make room for the new
  3. Having a vision makes the process a little bit easier

Life Things

In January we reset. At least that’s what January is for me.

I take advantage of the occasional burst of energy to edit, organize and rearrange. Otherwise, I’m curled up on the couch under an electric blanket wearing the softest, most comfortable clothes I own resting, restoring, and reflecting.

The Edit

I put a few clothing items that I don’t like enough to keep, Christmas decor I never use, home decor and home accents that just aren’t my style, and essential oils that trigger headaches in the donation bin. I even listed a few of the items on Facebook Marketplace.

Plucking my possessions out of some of my spaces left them in a mess. But, it also created space for my vision. Motivated to bring it to life, I started rearranging, moving accent furniture and accessories from room to room, and changing the layout of the guest bedrooms.

Guest Suite

This room is currently my daughter’s room.

The bed was centered under the window (because it’s ideal to see the foot of the bed when you walk into a bedroom) but the view always looked so disheveled. So, I centered the bed on the adjacent wall.

The bed has always had a nightstand on each side, but when I repositioned it, having two nightstands felt a little cramped. So, I decided to remove one nightstand and place the bed off center.

While it’s off center to the wall it sits on, it’s actually center with the dresser on the opposite wall. Plus, there’s more floor space between the bed and the closet.

Now we just have to find a new nightstand, tidy, and accessorize.

Guest Room

This room started out as my yoga room when we first moved in three years ago. But, when my daughter moved back home after graduating nursing school, I wanted to make sure I had a guest room available.

So, we set up the bed she had in her apartment in this room, and it has come in very handy.

However, that bed was one of the items I sold on Facebook. (My daughter didn't want to keep it.) My plan is to replace it with two twin beds.

Of course, both bedrooms need to be painted, and the ceiling fans replaced. And eventually, I plan to replace the carpet with wood floors.

Organizing

When we first moved into this house, I created storage systems using what I had, based on how I organized the last house. Three years later, I have a much better idea of what I want where and what storage solutions will work best.

I’m gradually updating and tweaking those organization systems. There's not much to show you just yet, but I'll definitely share photos when there is.

This home reset is inspiring hope for the vision I've always had for these rooms. It's setting a stage for the life I imagine.

Our homes are in fact a stage where our lives play out. We get to direct the play based on the way we want to live in and use the space. Never underestimate the role your home plays in your life vision and goals.

Space planning and organization support our daily routines. Our daily routines build habits, and those habits help us accomplish goals and achieve our vision.

It's what makes the loss and destruction of the LA fires so devastating. My sincerest sympathy goes out to all who have been affected. I pray they find solace, support, and comfort as they rebuild what was lost.

Quick Things

Simple tips, smart advice, and personal recommendations for creating simplicity and ease in your everyday life.

If the idea of letting go feels about as scary as bungee jumping off a cliff, here’s a healthy dose of courage. (No, not the liquid kind.)

As a self-proclaimed turtle living in a rabbit’s world, this is how I’m planning to eeeeeaaaasssse out of my reset era and into the new year.

These are my personal must-haves for creating a warm, cozy home every winter. (I'm sitting under one of them right now.)

Hi Reader, XO, MaCenna’s “extreme patio makeover" is paused on my t.v. screen because I keep thinking, I need to just write to you and tell you the truth. That truth is this. My goal is to send the newsletter on Friday mornings. This past week, I kept putting it off and putting it off until the last minute, As in late Thursday night. I jotted down my ideas into an outline and was going to push myself until that outline was filled out and ready to hit publish. But, my head was feeling a little...
